An Australian young sportsman has lost his life after being struck by a cricket delivery during a practice session in the Australian city.

The 17-year-old athlete was practicing in cricket cages in Ferntree Gully on the weekday when he was hit in the upper body by a ball from an automatic bowling machine. Reports indicate he was using a protective headgear at the time of the incident.

First responders were dispatched to the scene shortly before 17:00 in the afternoon and the teenager was rushed to Monash Children's Hospital in critical condition. He was put on life support but died on the following day.

Local Response and Support

The boy's local cricket club stated they were "completely heartbroken" by the "tragic passing" of one of their players and that the adolescent's passing "will impact by everyone in our cricket community".

"I understand how heavily this news will land across our local area and we will provide any and all support we can to our teams and sports community," stated the local cricket association president.

In a online statement, the teenager's sports team extended their sympathies to his loved ones and friends and "to everyone who knew him and the joy that he provided".

"We ask you to please honor the privacy of the loved ones during this challenging period," the message added.

Protective Considerations in Cricket

This incident occurs just over a decade after another Australian cricketer passed away after being hit on the neck by a ball while batting in a domestic competition.

That earlier death, for which investigators ultimately found no-one was to blame, sparked enhancements to protective gear for those participating in the sport.
