Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel ran across the track directly in front of him

The concerning event happened on the third lap when track officials were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to replace his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"

"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals dashing across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be authorized to just run across the track in that manner. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"

Official Investigation Underway

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is actively examining the events

"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was advised that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the FIA

"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was shown in that area"

"The examination is ongoing what transpired following that moment"
